What’s Your Legacy?

Rick Barton with his wife Joyce

“My dad was a great example of what it means to be generous.” It was because of this example that Rick Barton and his wife, Joyce, didn’t have to think twice about making a bequest to Northwest Nazarene University a few years back when reviewing their estate plans.

Rick (’66) and Joyce (Mittelstaedt, ‘66) of Post Falls, Idaho, like so many others, began their story together at NNU where they met and fell in love. For Rick and Joyce it was senior year during a student officer’s retreat in McCall. Shortly thereafter they enjoyed the senior class hayride as their first date and within a year they were married.

“NNU is a place we’ve deeply appreciated over the years. Not only is it where we met each other, this place provided an exceptional education and experience to us and to our children… we’d like to help make sure that it benefits students for generations to come,” says Rick. The Barton family is passionate about the mission and ministry of NNU and have committed to doing what they can to support it and all the ministries in which they are passionate.

“Joyce and I chose to leave a portion of our estate to NNU for the creation of an endowed scholarship fund in the School of Theology and Christian Ministries. We think it’s vitally important to assist men and women who have received a call to ministry in order to help grow the Kingdom of God.”

After a long and successful career, Rick retires as regional president of US Bank in April 2010. He’s looking forward to some free time and will enjoy more biking, backpacking and camping trips with Joyce, along with a little more golf and Geocaching (a high tech treasure hunting game) on his own.

Time will still be at a premium for Rick and Joyce, even in retirement, as they continue with lay witness mission trips and small group ministries at True North Church of the Nazarene. Rick also currently serves as a Trustee for NNU and Joyce volunteers at a local pregnancy resource center in Coeur d’Alene.

NNU is so grateful for the Barton’s generosity and involvement! While Rick and Joyce are exceptional examples of Christian charity and faithfulness, they are not alone among the NNU family. More than 400 individuals are part of the Legacy Partners giving club, having already notified NNU of plans to leave a legacy through an estate gift to benefit the University and her students. To each of you, we simply can’t say it enough: thank you!
